Wabdio: The House of Elephant, a Place of Spirit, is magnificent and grand in stature. The original linen canvas measures 5’ 5” x 4’ 10” (166cm x 148cm), and is the largest canvas in the collection. The majestic elephant, revered in Dagara culture, stands as a symbol of wisdom, loyalty, and profound protection.
Elephants are adaptable creatures that are at home in all areas of Earth. They bring a powerful energy of meditation and connection. Their immense physical presence is matched only by their depth of spiritual energy they carry as an offering to humanity of profound insights and guidance to help on our journey through the goodness and success of our lives.
The collective noun for a group of elephants is known as a “memory”, which is fitting for the mythical intergenerational power of the memory of elephants, as the parable goes, “an elephant never forgets.” With this is mind, the Wabdio art piece represents the place of deep remembering of our familial, cultural, and spiritual lineages - and the collective reservoir of our inherited memory that is stewarded by our ancestors through the ages.
The Elephant’s is gained through their individual and collective experiences which create a remarkable ability to make sound decisions through careful consideration, while looking after the best interest of the collective community as a priority over the individual interests of one’s self. Elephants also embody strength, both physical and inner spiritual strength, enabling individuals to overcome obstacles, like in the story of the Hindu Deity, Ganesha.
Elephants are revered throughout West Africa for their deep connection to nature and the wild, earning their reputation as leaders of the animal kingdom guided by an innate ethic to protect and serve the interests of the community, with a deeply grounding energetic presence that is both calm and contemplative, with a fierce protective instinct and remarkable courage.
